Webb wins sixth AMA Supercross event at AT&T Stadium, Deegan earns first career victory
AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is commonly referred to as Jerry World — a reference to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones — but it may be time to call it by a new name: Cooper World.
Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cooper Webb secured his sixth career win in Arlington — the most in AMA Supercross history — on Saturday, Feb. 24. Despite trailing Jett Lawrence of Team Honda HRC for the first 23 laps of the event, Webb took advantage of a late mistake from the rookie to pull ahead for the final four laps and claim the victory.
“Obviously I got a little bit of a handout [when Jett crashed] but man, I just kept pushing my laps [and] was trying to stay as close as I could to Jett,” Webb said. “I’ve got to give it up to this place, it’s always good to me… I might as well just buy a suite here because I love this place.”
Webb was joined on the podium by his teammate Eli Tomac — who fought his way back into the top two after an early crash — and Red Bull KTM’s Aaron Plessinger. With the victory, Webb joined Lawrence as the only racers to claim multiple 450SX class wins this season.
After a fourth-place finish in Arlington, Lawrence remains at the top of the overall 450 SX standings with 135 points on the season. Webb climbed two spots to No. 2 in the standings after his victory, trailing Lawrence by three points, while Plessinger remained in third place with 128 points.
While Webb maintained his dominance at AT&T Stadium, Monster Energy Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan made a name for himself. Deegan collected his first-career AMA Supercross victory, claiming the second round of the 250SX East title race.
Deegan trailed for the first 16 laps of the race before a devastating crash from then-leader Austin Forkner of Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki allowed the Temecula, Calif., native to run away with the win.
“I am so amped right now. My first career win in Supercross, this is unreal,” Deegan said. “Obviously, man, that’s terrible to see Austin, [he was] ripping, and to see that happen is sad, man. I wanted to fight for this with him, man.”
Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Cameron McAdoo battled back from a seventh-place start to finish second, while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle placed third behind him. Deegan’s victory pushed him into fifth place in the overall 250SX East standings, with the young racer holding 31 total points.
Through two rounds of the 250SX East race, Fire Power Parts Honda Racing’s Max Anstie holds first place in the overall standings with 38 points while Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GasGas’ Pierce Brown sits in second with 34 points. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Daxton Bennick and Muc-Off FXR ClubMX Yamaha’s Coty Schock are tied for third place with 32 points each.
The 2024 AMA Supercross season heads to sunny Daytona Beach, Fla., for the eighth round of bar-banging action on Saturday, March 2. The event will be streamed live on Peacock.
