PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Aug. 7, 2024) — Tens of thousands of motorcyclists from around the country and the world gathered at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, July 26-28 for 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha — one of the largest single-weekend events in all of motorcycling, including North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet.

Organized and co-promoted by the American Motorcyclist Association, along with facility owner and co-promoter Green-Savoree Racing Promotions, the annual event raises funds for the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that helps fund the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame’s mission to promote and preserve the history and heritage of motorcycling in America.

“Every year the AMA takes great pride in organizing AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman, “and this year was even more special as the AMA celebrated its 100th Anniversary. The weekend gives motorcyclists a chance to celebrate vintage bikes while spending time with family and friends, enjoying the freedom of two wheels with like-minded enthusiasts. This event wouldn’t be possible without a long list of partners, supporters and volunteers. We appreciate them all, as well as everyone who attended the record-breaking event, which enables us to raise money for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.”

The Grand Marshal for the event was AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer and six-time AMA National Champion Broc Glover, who spent time signing autographs, participating in question-and-answer sessions, greeting fans, and racing on the motocross track. Each day he also led the Lap of History aboard a Yamaha Tenere 700 kindly provided by the marque, which served as presenting sponsor of the event.

“AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is an incredible event,” Glover said, “and the fact that it was the celebration of the AMA’s 100th Anniversary made it even more special. I’ve never seen anything like it. The part I loved the most was seeing motorcyclists of all ages — from young kids to veteran riders — riding around and enjoying themselves. It was my first year attending VMD, but it won’t be my last!”

AMA Business Development Manager Michael Kula thanked the many companies who supported the event financially.

“A huge thank you to Permco, who was our Title Sponsor for the second year in a row,” Kula said. “We also appreciate Yamaha, who was the event’s Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors included State Farm, Royal Enfield, B’laster, SSR Motorsports, Motozilli Powersports, Biltwell, Kenda Tire, American Motor Drome Company, Classic British Motorcycle Club, Iron Pony, STACYC, Mimi & Moto, Moto Motion, Skidmark Garage, Motorcycles and Coffee, Vintage Rides, Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club, Angel Boy by Boozy, Big Ear Inc., DC Dirt Camp, Legends and Heroes Moto Museum, Liquid Lab & Studio, Red Bull, Ryvid Inc., Smart Massage, Thrive Medical Center, National Cycle, Brakecrafters, Cometic Gasket, Klotz Lubricants.

“Our friends at Yamaha, Triumph and Royal Enfield,” Kula continued, “also had demo bikes for attendees to test ride throughout the weekend. We can’t thank them — and all of these companies — enough for their support, especially since the proceeds help support the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.”

AMA Director of Marketing & Communications Joy Burgess expressed her appreciation of the many AMA members who helped make the event — and the AMA’s 100th Anniversary — a success.

“Our main goal at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days,” Burgess said, “is to put on an event that allows our members to enjoy the thrill and freedom of two wheels while celebrating the history of motorcycling. We enjoyed the chance to meet and hear from our members who not only appreciated the event but were thrilled to celebrate the AMA’s Centennial at VMD. We appreciate all the members who attended, and the many new ones who joined.

“A record-breaking number of members joined during the weekend,” Burgess continued, “and we look forward to seeing them all return next year.”

During the event, members not only packed the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Tent in the Hall of Fame Fanzone in the infield to renew their membership or join the AMA, they celebrated the organization’s centennial by purchasing and wearing AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days and AMA 100 Years gear. Gear quickly sold out, but those wishing to purchase gear celebrating the AMA’s Centennial can visit AMAGear.com.

In addition to AMA President & CEO Rob Dingman, several other AMA Board members attended to support the event, including Directors Gary Pontius, Brad Baumert, Chris Cox and Maggie McNally.

Multiple celebrities made appearances at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days as the AMA celebrated 100 years of protecting the rights of motorcyclists. American country singer, songwriter and actor Lyle Lovett attended on Saturday, not only spending time enjoying the vintage event, but also speaking with Grand Marshal Broc Glover on the AMA stage. Also in attendance was famed guitarist Billy Morris, who has played in several bands including Warrant and Quiet Riot.

“It was a treat to interview Broc and Lyle on the AMA stage,” said AMA Editorial Director Mitch Boehm. “Most folks know Broc’s amazing history, but hearing Lyle talk about his early days riding and racing Pentons down in Texas was genuinely fascinating, and I know the fans who attended the chat were psyched to hear it all.”

Many AMA members, as well as AMA-chartered and partner organizations, showed up to the event as volunteers as well.

“More than 100 volunteers — including 72 AMA member volunteers, volunteers from AMA-chartered organization the Christian Motorcyclist Association and our partner Motorcycle Ohio — came out to help,” said AMA Membership Event and Program Manager Makenzi Martin. “We can’t thank them — as well as our AMA staff — enough for committing their time and efforts to make AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days a success.”

Vintage racing at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days brought in thousands of race entries in vintage motocross, trials, hare scrambles, pit bike racing, flat track and road racing.

“Thanks to the efforts of our team and the support of our racing partners and volunteers, we enjoyed one of the most successful events in AMA history,” said AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier.

“The Roadracing World Action Fund has long been one of our key racing partners,” Pelletier continued, “and we appreciate them — along with MotoAmerica — providing us with soft barriers for the road-race course. The Roadracing World Action Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving rider safety and reducing racetrack injuries, and we encourage the motorcycle community to support  their efforts at https://www.roadracingworld.com/actionfund/. ”

Pelletier also thanked BAJA MX Inc., for motocross operations and racing registration, WERA for road race operations, announcer Kevin Kelly, Trials Incorporated for trials operations, Mandi Mastin for hare scrambles operations, Log Road MX for motocross track preparation, Christian Motorcycle Association for flagging duties, Brian Kozicki Events for AV assistance, Bagger Racing League Worldwide LLC for pitbike and bagger racing, Acerbis for course markers, eScore Electronic Event Scoring, MX Trophies, RaceLine Ministry (Mark and Dawn Merical), and Fenix Medical Transportation Special Events Division.

For flat track racing, special thanks to race officials and flaggers, Ashland County Fairgrounds, and AMA Hall of Famer David Aldana.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is home to North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, and this year the swap meet sold out of space several weeks before the event took place.

“The VMD swap meet was bigger than ever this year,” said AMA Director of Information Technology Shaun Holloway. “We had more than 825 available spaces for vendors, and they sold out before the event. Then we added a few more spaces on site and sold those, as well. We thank all our vendors for making the swap meet a success again this year, and we’re excited to see everyone return for 2025 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.”

AMA Chief Operating Officer James Holter expressed appreciation for Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the AMA’s most important operational partner.

“Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course offers one of the few facilities in the country able to accommodate the many activities that make AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days what it is: the most distinct, expansive and fun event in all of motorcycling,” Holter said. “This wouldn’t be possible without the professional and experienced team running the track. Led by Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course President Craig Rust, track personnel put in significant work behind the scenes ensuring that fans, sponsors and vendors, and AMA staff are safe and free to have a great weekend.”

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is the country’s premier celebration of vintage motorcycles and one of the largest single-weekend motorcycle events each summer. Learn more about AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, check out photos of the event and read stories at VintageMotorcycleDays.com.

Quinn Wentzel and Mark Murphy emerge as best off-road racers during the AMA Vintage Grand Championship in Lexington, Ohio

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (July 31, 2024) — For three days, a large collection of racers from across the country competed for the titles of AMA Vintage Grand Champion and AMA Vintage Senior Grand Champion at 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha.

Compiling points from the AMA Vintage Grand Championship, which consists of motocross, hare scrambles and trials competition, Quinn Wentzel of Canfield, Ohio, collected his second-consecutive AMA Vintage Grand Championship — his sixth overall — while Mark Murphy from Geneseo, N.Y. claimed the AMA Vintage Senior Grand Champion title.

With previous AMA Vintage Grand Championships in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2023, Wentzel raced his way back to the top of the leaderboard again during the three-day event. Capturing second-place finishes in the Vintage Vet 250cc A class in hare scrambles and Vintage Open A class in motocross, in addition to a class win in Vintage Old School trials, Wentzel ran away with the overall title while clearing second-place Chris Arnold by 23 points.

“We come here pretty much every year, and some years we don’t [win] because whatever reason, bike troubles and whatnot,” Wentzel said. “It’s always good when the bikes make it through and we have a good finish. It means a lot and it’s nice to have my family and friends out here. It’s a fun weekend for us all.”

AMA Vintage Senior Grand Champion Mark Murphy

While Wentzel dominated the field, Murphy eked out the AMA Vintage Senior Grand Championship by just one point. Murphy had a second-place finish in hare scrambles while landing a pair of fourth-place finishes in the Vintage Senior 40+ class in motocross and Vintage Factory Expert in trials competition to earn the overall title.

“My motorcycle stayed together, and trying to keep a 40- or 50-year-old motorcycle together for three different competitions, it all starts there,” Murphy said. “Then, it’s self-preservation, dumb luck and charging as hard as you can while having a good attitude. You have to have grit.”

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (July 19, 2024) — With a wide collection of vintage road racing on the schedule at 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha — running July 26-28 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio — the American Motorcyclist Association extends its gratitude to the Roadracing World Action Fund (RWAF) and MotoAmerica for their assistance in creating an excellent road racing program at VMD this year.

“We are so grateful to our friends at the RWAF and MotoAmerica for their support in our road racing efforts at VMD,” AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant said. “RWAF Founder and President John Ulrich and the RWAF have shown tremendous generosity for this event, specifically allowing us to use their inflatable soft barriers for VMD road races.”

The RWAF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to reducing racetrack injuries through education and advocating for safer racetrack practices. Created in 2001, the RWAF works with racing and track day organizations to facilitate deployment of soft barriers at events across the country.

Soft barriers made by Alpina and Airfence have an internal ambient air chamber supported by inflated ribs. They’re made to be deployed in front of steel barriers, tire walls, embankments and other hard objects surrounding racetracks. When a rider crashes and hits a soft barrier, air is pushed out through blow-off valves, absorbing energy; in simple terms, soft barriers can be thought of as being like a giant, pre-inflated car airbag.

“Thanks to our generous supporters, the Roadracing World Action Fund has been able to fund the Alpina and Airfence soft barriers assigned to MotoAmerica and deployed at MotoAmerica Superbike events sanctioned by the AMA,” RWAF Founder and President John Ulrich said. “Since the next MotoAmerica round will be held at Mid-Ohio August 16-18, those soft barriers will already be at Mid-Ohio, and I’m happy that we’re able to have AMA deploy them for the VMD road races. I am proud that, working with MotoAmerica, AMA, and other organizations nationwide, we’ve been able to improve rider safety and reduce injuries. Together, we have helped make a big difference in the culture of road racing in the United States, making attention on rider safety not just accepted, but also expected.”

The road racing program at VMD is sure to deliver, with 35 classes taking to the 2.4-mile racetrack to compete for AMA National No. 1 plates. For the first time, the AMA Amateur National Bagger Champion will be crowned at VMD, adding to the exciting racing slate. For more information on road racing at VMD, visit vintagemotorcycledays.com/racing/road-racing/.

There will be plenty more to do at Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha, with North America’s largest swap meet, a collection of vendor displays and seminars at the Hall of Fame Fanzone in the infield, demo rides, bike shows, and much more!

Vintage Minicycle joins championship classes at Friday night pitbike spectacle

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association will bring vintage form and modern pitbike racing together this July 26 at Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha. America’s grandest celebration of vintage motorcycles runs July 26-28 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

The pitbike competition will welcome older riders competing on minibikes, some as small as 50cc. The competition will range from laid back to blitzing-fast action on purpose-built, highly modified race machines. A fun youth class also will be offered.

AMA-chartered promoter Bagger Racing League (BRL) is partnering with the AMA to promote and operate the pitbike program at 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

“While the AMA may be a century old, the sport continues to find ways to innovate and bring new excitement to the racetrack,” said BRL founder Rob Buydos. “Pitbikes are small, but in the right hands, they produce some of the most exciting bar-banging action you’ll see. We’ll have classes for pretty much anyone at VMD, and we expect many of them to fill up fast, so sign up now!”

Organized pitbike racing has been a staple of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days for years, but this will be the inaugural year pitbike racing joins the AMA Vintage Grand Championship program, awarding AMA National Championships in select classes.

Motorcycling history will be showcased by the Vintage Minicycle class, which will feature motocross and trail bikes, primarily 80cc two-strokes from the 1970s. Also featured will be the AMA 100-Year Anniversary Invitational, which will include high-profile riders and legends, honoring the 100-year history of the AMA.

“Pitbike racing is not a modern concept, having been part of the dirt bike scene for generations, and for good reason. It speaks directly to the fun, thrill and pure joy of experiencing the freedom of two wheels,” said AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier. “This year, VMD will elevate pitbike racing to a new level for the event, while shining a spotlight on vintage-class pitbikes in the Vintage Minicycle class.”

In addition to the Vintage Minicycle class, AMA National Championship classes will include Production Modified, Production Limited and Vet (age 35 and older).

Non-championship classes will include Unlimited, Women, Trailbike and Industry. A Youth class will be provided for riders ages 4 to 8 on 50cc playbikes and trail bikes.

Supplemental rules for the pitbike racing at VMD, as well as pre-entry information, are available now at https://vintagemotorcycledays.com.

Staged at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha features vintage and post-vintage competition in motocross, trials, hare scrambles, road racing and dirt track. PICKERINGTON, Ohio (May 21, 2024) — Racing registration for 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha — set for July 26-28 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio — is now officially open for those interested in competing in a variety of vintage racing disciplines.

Vintage racing is at the heart of the VMD experience, and racers can pre-register at vintagemotorcycledays.com/racing/ to get in on the three days of bar-banging action.

“There’s never a shortage of racing fun at VMD, and 2024 will be no exception,” AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier said. “With the addition of new classes, alongside the wide range of racing opportunities previously offered at VMD, there’s something for racers of all backgrounds this year. We urge all those interested in racing to pre-register to secure their spot at what’s bound to be the biggest VMD yet.”

Running alongside AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the AMA Vintage Grand Championship offers racers the chance to compete for AMA National No. 1 plates in motocross, hare scrambles, road racing, trials, and now, pitbike racing. Racers must compete on vintage motorcycles, spanning several eras across the different disciplines available at VMD.

Two new AMA Amateur National Championships will be added to the packed racing schedule at Vintage Motorcycle Days this year. The AMA Amateur National Bagger Champion will be crowned on Saturday, July 27, while No. 1 plates will also be awarded in a variety of pitbike classes during the three-day event.

In addition to the action on-site at Mid-Ohio, a round of the AMA Vintage Flat Track National Championship Series will be held at the Ashland County Fairgrounds — located roughly 25 miles from Lexington — on July 27 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Ashland Dinner Ride, which is being elevated to a VIP Flat Track Experience for the AMA’s 100th anniversary, takes riders on a scenic route to the flat track action at the Ashland County Fairgrounds, is also open for registration. Alongside the beautiful ride, those interested will enjoy special parking, a pit pass, grandstand seating, a special-edition AMA 100th Anniversary Ashland Dinner Ride t-shirt, and dinner at the legendary half-mile track for a $100 donation to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Visit https://vintagemotorcycledays.com/ashland-dinner-ride/ to register.

At the end of the three-day racing extravaganza, the AMA Vintage Grand Champion and AMA Vet/Senior Vintage Grand Champion will be crowned, recognizing the racers that collect the most combined points from the off-road racing disciplines — motocross, trials, hare scrambles, and pitbike racing.

All racers must possess general admission tickets to VMD prior to gate entry. Only pre-registered riders with entry confirmation will receive access to Mid-Ohio through Gate 3 on Thursday, July 25, at 9 a.m. General admission gates open at 5 p.m. that same day.

Minimum age requirements to participate can be found below:

  • Trials: 4 years and up
  • Motocross and Hare Scrambles: 9 years and up
  • Flat Track: 12 years and up
  • Road Race: 14 years and up
  • Pitbike: 4 years and up

VMD extends far beyond vintage racing, as well, with North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows, vendor displays, stunt shows and much more planned.

The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Bike Show, complete with an AMA 100th anniversary theme, is also open for pre-registration with a $20 entry fee. For more information, and to register, visit vintagemotorcycledays.com/bike-show/.

One of the most noteworthy recreational opportunities includes the Lap for History, which takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the event, and allows riders the chance to ride around the historic 2.4-mile road racing circuit at Mid-Ohio. Those interested can pre-register by donating $10 to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame at .

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (May 9, 2024) — This year’s Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha will double as the AMA’s centennial celebration, running July 26-28 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, and who better to ring in the festivities than the “Golden Boy” of the golden years of professional motocross?

As Yamaha will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the fabled YZ250 at VMD, six-time AMA motocross national champion, Yamaha legend, and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Broc Glover will serve as the event’s Grand Marshal, engraining himself in a three-day long celebration of all things vintage motorcycling.

“I am really looking forward to this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio,” Glover said. “Sadly, I’ve never been to VMD, but it’s been on my bucket list for years. I hear it’s quite an event, but this year seems like it will be even more spectacular, with the AMA’s 100th and Yamaha’s 50th for the YZ being celebrated. It is a tremendous honor to be named Grand Marshal for such a special event. I look forward to taking in the sights and sounds that vintage motorcycling offers, and spending time with some of the most loyal enthusiasts in the world.”

A native of San Diego, Glover’s motorcycling journey began when he was only nine years old, and experienced a major upshift when he began racing at age 13. Although financial hardship hindered his early racing efforts, Glover was clearly a standout competitor, and made the jump to the pro ranks when he was just 16.

After his promising rookie campaign, Glover signed a professional contract with Yamaha in 1977 and remained with the brand for the rest of his illustrious racing career. In his first three seasons with the marque, Glover raced to a trio of AMA 125cc Motocross National Championships and became the first racer to win three consecutive titles in the class. During that run, Glover also notched a win at the 125cc U.S. Grand Prix at the old Mid-Ohio Moto Park venue in Lexington, Ohio…just a few miles from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where VMD takes place each year.

Glover moved to the 500cc class in 1981 and didn’t skip a beat, winning three more titles in 1981, 1983 and 1985. Glover retired in 1989 and finished his career with a stunning 50 AMA National Motocross wins.

“Broc Glover is a champion in every sense of the word, both on and off the racetrack,” AMA Editorial Director Mitch Boehm said, “but especially so in terms of his long affiliation with Yamaha, which will celebrate its legendary YZ250 model at VMD. And so we are super excited to welcome him as Grand Marshal for this year’s VMD celebration. With Yamaha as presenting sponsor, and the YZ250’s 50th and the AMA’s 100th both being celebrated, this year’s VMD is definitely going to be one for the ages.”

At VMD, Glover will be on hand to sign autographs, speak to enthusiasts at the AMA Soundstage, participate in the Lap for History on the track at Mid-Ohio each day, and much more. Yamaha will also be on-site with historic bikes and demo rides, while Glover will be joined by several other racing champions that rode for the historic marque.

Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha is fast approaching and is primed to be yet another very special event. With North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows, AMA Hall of Fame exhibits, vendor displays and racing in several disciplines, there’s something for everyone at VMD.
