Six are elected from the individual membership and four are elected from the business membership. The 10 elected members additionally appoint two at-large members, who are ratified by AMA membership at the annual member meeting.
A diversity of experience and expertise is the goal, pulling board members from the motorcycling industry, AMA-chartered clubs, general membership and the entire motorcycle community, all committed to carrying out the AMA mission of protecting and promoting motorcycling in America.

By watching trends at the local, state, national and international levels, the AMA can quickly identify and act on any potential threats to ensure that motorcyclists enjoy the same opportunities and benefits that are afforded to drivers of other types of vehicles.
Occasionally, some issues arise that are of such continued importance or impact that the AMA Board of Directors decides to publish a position statement detailing the organization’s official stance on the issue at hand.
